Google is very popular search engine invented by Larry Page
and Sergey Brin. “Google” was named after a word googol which is the name for
the number 1 followed by 100 zeros found in the book “Mathematics and
Imagination” by Edward Kanser and James Newman. According to the google’s
founder the name represents the immense amount of information that a search
engine has to shift through.
WHO IS LARRY PAGE
AND SERGEY BRIN?
Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at the Stanford
University as graduate student in computer science during 1995. This pair began
collaborating on writing a program for search engine by January of 1996 dubbed
BackRub named after its ability to do back link analysis.
After the rave
review that BackRub received, Larry Page and Sergey Brin began working on
Google. They built a server network using cheap, used and borrowed PCs by
operating out their dorm rooms. They bought terabytes of disks at discount prices
and maxed their credit cards. They tried to license their search engine
technology but seemed failure to find anyone to buy their product at an early stage
of development so, they decided to keep Google, seek more financing, improve
the product and unveiled the product themselves. The planned worked and after
more development Google was hot and top commodity. Google was in fire so,
co-founder of Sun Microsystems, Andy Bechtolsheim said after a quick demo of
Google, “instead of us discussing all the details why don’t I just write you a
check?” next the $100,000 check was made out to Google Inc. but Google Inc. did
not exist as a legal entity yet. So, the pair incorporated within two weeks,
cashed that check and raised $900,000 more for their initial funding.
Google Inc. opened
in Menio Park, California in September of 1998 and google.com a beta (test
status) was answering 10,000 search queries per day. On September 21st,
1999 Google officially removed the beta from its title.
